When people bring jewellery to sell, one question often comes up: Do the small diamonds in my ring, earrings, or bracelet have any value?
The answer is that small diamonds can have resale value. Their value depends on their quality, total carat weight, natural origin, and whether they can be reused or resold.
At SellYourJewellery, we evaluate small natural diamonds as part of our jewellery-buying service. We pay for diamonds of reasonable quality and above, with the offer determined by their quality and carat weight. We also buy loose diamonds, including smaller stones.
This matters because small diamonds are not always included in a buying offer. Many customers tell us that other buyers, including large jewellery chains they have visited, did not offer value for the small diamonds in their jewellery.
Our approach is to assess the diamonds rather than assume that small means worthless.
Small diamonds used in jewellery are often called melee diamonds. They are commonly set around a larger centre stone or used to create sparkle across a ring, bracelet, necklace, or pair of earrings.
They can be found in:
- Diamond rings with pavé or side stones
- Half-eternity and eternity rings
- Diamond tennis bracelets
- Diamond earrings
- Necklaces and pendants
- Jewellery with clusters of smaller diamonds
Although each stone may be small, a piece of jewellery can contain many of them. Their combined carat weight and quality can affect the value of the item.

Does SellYourJewellery pay for small diamonds?
Yes. We consider small natural diamonds of different sizes and pay for stones of reasonable quality and above.
Our offer is based on the diamonds’ quality and carat weight. In general, larger total carat weight and better quality can result in a higher offer.
We do not apply one fixed price to every small diamond. Two pieces of jewellery may contain a similar number of stones but have different values because the diamonds differ in quality, size, or consistency.
We can also evaluate loose small diamonds. They do not need to be set in jewellery for us to consider them.
Why might another buyer not pay for the small diamonds?
Different jewellery buyers operate in different ways.
Some businesses focus mainly on the precious metal content of jewellery. If their business model is to melt an item, they may not have a practical resale channel for its small diamonds. Removing many tiny stones can also take time and effort.
At SellYourJewellery, our diamond expertise allows us to assess whether the stones may have value beyond the metal.
We cannot speak for every buyer or every business model. However, many customers have told us that they visited other jewellery chains and were not offered value for the small diamonds in their items.
If you are selling jewellery with small diamonds, it is worth asking the buyer directly: Are you evaluating the diamonds, or only the gold or platinum?
How do we evaluate small diamonds?
Small diamonds require careful assessment. The number of stones alone is not enough to determine their value.
1. Checking whether the diamonds are natural
We use testing equipment to help assess whether the stones are natural diamonds. This is important because we do not purchase lab-grown diamonds.
2. Examining the stones with a diamond loupe
A diamond loupe allows our evaluator to examine the stones more closely. Their characteristics can affect the quality assessment and the potential value.
3. Assessing quality and consistency
We look at the overall appearance of the stones and how consistent they are in quality. A group of small diamonds that is relatively unified in appearance may be assessed differently from a group with significant variation.
4. Considering total carat weight
The combined carat weight matters. A jewellery item may contain many small stones, and their total weight is one factor in the offer.
5. Considering the jewellery as a whole
We also consider the overall piece. High-quality jewellery, particularly pieces set with premium-quality diamonds, may have value beyond the precious metal alone.
The final offer depends on the relevant factors together—not simply on the number of stones or the gold weight.
Are there cases where we do not pay for small diamonds?
Yes. Not every diamond has sufficient quality or resale potential for us to make an offer.
We do not purchase poor-quality diamonds or lab-grown diamonds.
There can also be a rare situation involving very tiny diamonds in jewellery that is being purchased for melting. If the stones are so small that removing them is not economically worthwhile, we may not include a separate amount for them.
This is not a blanket rule based on a specific size. We consider the item and its stones individually.
Are small diamonds worth more when they are part of premium jewellery?
The quality of the diamonds and the overall jewellery can make a difference.
For example, a piece with a larger total carat weight of well-matched, higher-quality natural diamonds may have a different resale opportunity from a piece containing lower-quality stones.
We assess the diamonds’ characteristics, their combined weight, and how the jewellery presents as a whole. Where a piece has premium-quality diamonds or other resale potential, that can influence the offer.
This is why it is useful to have the complete item assessed rather than estimate its value only from the gold weight.
What should you do if you want to sell jewellery with small diamonds?
If you have a ring, bracelet, earrings, or another piece of jewellery with small diamonds, ask the buyer how the stones will be assessed.
You can ask:
- Will you evaluate the diamonds, or only the precious metal?
- Do you consider small natural diamonds?
- Does the offer account for the diamonds’ quality and total carat weight?
- Are the diamonds assessed as a group or individually?
- Does the overall jewellery design or quality affect the offer?
These questions can help you understand what is included in the evaluation and compare offers more meaningfully.
